Top kitchen ceiling designs to try at home

Design and decor ideas

Be honest: when it comes to designing your dream kitchen, did you stop to consider your ceiling? The answer is most likely to be no. But actually, there are so many ways you can design your kitchen ceiling, to truly elevate your look. So, it’s time to start seeing your ceiling as your fifth wall, so you can decorate it with something more than just lighting...

Top kitchen ceiling designs to try at home

Add a pop of colour with kitchen ceiling paint

Add an unexpected pop of colour to your space with some kitchen ceiling paint. Large kitchens with high ceilings can get away with dark and dramatic colours like navy and blue – pair it with white walls, and colour - coordinating wall art.

Alternatively, a pop of colour on your ceiling can inject personality into a white kitchen, while brightening up the space and making it feel light and airy – think sunshine yellow, crimson red, and lime green.

A colour-block ceiling can look modern and fresh too – purple walls with a yellow ceiling, or a combination of blue and green may not sound right on paper but when used on your kitchen ceiling and walls they work surprisingly well!

Do you prefer an understated look and feel? Paint your kitchen ceiling in a hue that’s a few shades lighter than the rest of your kitchen. For example, if blush pink is your accent colour, then paint your ceiling in the palest pink, for a rosy glow.

If you’re lucky enough to have original features like wooden beams in your kitchen, then work with what you’ve got! Whether you whitewash them or paint them in a sophisticated teal or purple shade, they’ll frame the rest of your kitchen perfectly.

Alternatively, if you consider yourself an artist, then invest in some bead boards and create your own mural – we love the Scandinavian folk feel evoked by a colourful floral design.

Before you start painting your kitchen ceiling, remember to choose ones with a flat or matte finish as opposed to a glossy finish – otherwise, even the smallest imperfections in your ceiling will be highlighted for everyone to see.

Enhance your room with kitchen ceiling tiles

If you’d like to create a statement with your kitchen ceiling but don’t want to get the paint out, then tiles could be the perfect solution for you.

For an authentic look and feel, opt for tin-covered steel ceiling tiles – they come in a variety of patterns and engravings, and give off a distinctive Victoriana vibe.

Do you want to upgrade your kitchen ceiling design on a budget? Styrofoam tiles are the answer. Lightweight and easy to install, they’re a novice DIYers dream, and best of all, they won’t break the bank!

If you have a kitchen diner or an island, then arrange your tiles directly over it, whilst letting them sit flush to the rest of your ceiling to create the ideal fusion of traditional and modern.

Install a coffered kitchen ceiling

Wondering what a coffered ceiling is? Essentially, it’s where your roof’s framework features exposed beams that cross at different angles, creating a square or rectangular effect.

Coffered ceilings – like other decorated ceilings – draw the eyes upward, creating the illusion of more space in your kitchen. However, they work better in rooms that have high ceilings (think 9 feet plus), otherwise, you run the risk of banging your head on the beams!

These beams can easily be installed into your home, as they aren’t load-bearing. Circular and diagonal designs add a contemporary feel – especially if you paint the spaces in between your beams.

While the walls, cupboards, worktops and floor are the first things that spring to mind when decorating your kitchen, it’s easy to neglect your ceiling. But, if you think of it as your fifth wall, then you can use it to tie your décor together, and even add an extra dimension to your designs.
